Custom shades — roller, blackout, zebra, honeycomb and sheer

Vancouver's factory-direct shade manufacturer. We build every shade locally and install it with our own crew. Solar fabrics that cut glare while keeping your view, full blackout for bedrooms and media rooms, and everything between. Roller shades are our most popular product. The right shade depends on your room, your light, and your priorities.

Choosing the Right Shade

Which shade fits your room?

The right shade depends on three things: what you want to control (glare, heat, privacy, or light), how much daylight you want to keep, and the look you’re going for. Here’s a quick guide.

Match the shade to the room

Living rooms and offices: solar roller shades (Solis 3% or 5%) for glare control with a preserved view. Bedrooms: blackout roller shades for full darkness. Dining rooms and kitchens: light-filtering roller shades or sheer horizontals for soft, diffused light. Kids’ rooms and nurseries: blackout with motorization for safety and convenience — no chains, no cords.

Match the shade to the problem

Glare on screens: solar roller shades. UV damage to furniture: Solis 1% or 3%. Full privacy: blackout or zebra shades. Energy efficiency: honeycomb (cellular) shades. Soft aesthetic: sheer horizontals. Smart-home integration: any shade with HT Smart Shades motorization.

Common questions about shades

What's the difference between roller shades and blinds?

Roller shades use a continuous piece of fabric that rolls up into a cassette at the top of the window. Blinds use individual slats — horizontal or vertical — that tilt for light control. Roller shades give a cleaner, more minimal look and are the most popular product we install.

What does the "openness factor" mean on solar fabrics?

Openness factor is the percentage of light and visibility that passes through a solar fabric. Solis 1% blocks 99% of light and UV — nearly opaque from outside but still gives you a view from inside. Solis 5% allows more light and a clearer view with less UV protection. Solis 3% is the most popular choice for a balance of glare control and view.

Can I get blackout shades that are also motorized?

Yes. Blackout roller shades are available with Somfy or Lutron motors in battery, plug-in, or hardwired configurations. Motorized blackout shades are especially popular in bedrooms and nurseries where cord-free operation is preferred.

What's the lead time for custom shades?

Most custom shade orders are manufactured in 2–3 weeks from the date of measurement. Motorized products may take slightly longer depending on motor availability.

Are honeycomb shades better for insulation than roller shades?

Yes. Honeycomb (cellular) shades have a structured air pocket that provides superior thermal insulation, which makes them the best-performing shade for energy efficiency. Roller shades with solar fabric reduce heat gain from UV but do not insulate the same way.

What's the difference between zebra shades and sheer horizontals?

Zebra shades use alternating sheer and opaque bands on a single roller — you shift the bands to control light. Sheer horizontals use fabric vanes suspended between two sheer panels that tilt like blinds. Both give light control with a soft look, but zebra shades read more modern and graphic while sheer horizontals feel closer to traditional window treatments.
